Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. (SSCC) is a manufacturer of paper and paper-based packaging, including containerboard, corrugated containers, industrial bags and clay-coated recycled boxboard, and is a large paper recycler. In addition, SSCC is a producer of solid bleached sulfate, folding cartons, paper tubes and cores, and labels. For the year ended Dec. 31, 2000, SSCC had net sales of $8,796 million and net income of $224 million.

SSCC is a holding company which conducts its business operations through two subsidiaries: JSCE, Inc. and Stone Container Corp. JSCE conducts all of its business operations through its subsidiary Jefferson Smurfit Corp. Collectively, these have operations throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Latin America.

The primary products of the company's Containerboard and Corrugated Containers segment include corrugated containers, containerboard, kraft paper, solid bleached sulfate and pulp. The segment includes 21 paper mills, 145 container plants, and six wood products plants.

The company's Boxboard and Folding Cartons segment produces coated recycled boxboard and folding cartons. The operations are integrated, with the majority of tons used internally by its folding carton operations. In addition, SSCC produces multiwall bags, consumer bags and intermediate bulk containers that are designed to safely and effectively ship a range of industrial and consumer products, including fertilizers, chemicals, concrete, flour, sugar, feed, seed, pet foods, popcorn, charcoal and salt. Also, SSCC produces specialty packaging products: uncoated recycled boxboard, paper tubes and cores, solid fiber partitions and consumer packaging. SSCC produces high-quality rotogravure cylinders and is experienced in the production of color separations and lithographic film the printing, advertising and packaging industries.

SSCC reclamation operations procure fiber resources for its paper mills as well as other producers. SSCC operates reclamation facilities in the U.S. that collect, sort, grade and bale recovered paper as well as aluminum and glass. In addition, SSCC operates a nationwide brokerage system whereby it purchases and resells recovered paper to the company's recycled paper mills and other producers.

INCORPORATED in Delaware in 1976 and on Dec. 14, 1989, acquired the remaining 50% of Container Corp. of America's (CCA) common equity (not owned by the company) for $500,000,000. Previously, on Sept. 30, 1986, the company had acquired 50% equity interest in CCA which was incorporated in 1968. December 31, 1994, wholly owned Jefferson Smurfit Corp. (U.S.) merged into its wholly owned Container Corp. of America subsidiary which, as the surviving corporation, changed its title to Jefferson Smurfit Corp. (U.S.). Adopted present title in 1998.
