History and Business of Company
(this information may include date of incorporation)
Invitrogen Corp. (IVGN) develops, makes, and markets more than 10,000 products for customers engaged in life sciences research and the commercial manufacture of genetically engineered products. IVGN says it supplies research kits and reagents that simplify and improve gene cloning, gene expression, and gene analysis techniques. The company also supplies sera, cell and tissue culture media and reagents used in life sciences research as well as in processes to grow cells in the laboratory and to produce pharmaceuticals and other materials made by cultured cells.

IVGN's research kits simplify and improve gene cloning, gene expression and gene analysis techniques as well as other molecular biology activities. These techniques and activities are used to study how a cell is regulated by its genetic material, known as functional genomics, and to search for drugs that can treat diseases. The company says its high-throughput gene cloning and expression technology allows the company to clone and expression- test genes on an industrial scale. IVGN is utilizing this technology to generate additional license, service and product opportunities.

On Feb. 2, 2000, the company acquired Research Genetics, Inc., a supplier of products and services for functional genomics and gene-based drug discovery research. On June 21, 2000, IVGN merged with Ethrog Biotechnologies Limited, an Israeli company that develops, manufactures, and markets products for laboratory use. On Sept. 14, 2000, the company completed its mergers with Life Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of life sciences products and services, and its parent company, Dexter Corp.

The company's NOVEX product line develops, manufactures and markets research electrophoresis products in pre-cast form, which the company says improves the speed, reliability and convenience of gel electrophoresis. Gel electrophoresis is a technique used as a tool to visualize the results of many different types of molecular biology experiments.

The life sciences research market consists of laboratories generally associated with universities, medical research centers, government institutions such as the National Institutes of Health, and other research institutions as well as biotechnology, pharmaceutical, energy, agricultural and chemical companies.

In November 2001, IVGN entered into an agreement to acquire exclusive worldwide rights to offer genotyping products to the research market utilizing Orchid BioSciences, Inc.'s proprietary SNP scoring technology in a 96-well format.
